Chocolate Orange Slice

I’ve always been obsessed with chocolate and orange. I mean what New Zealander doesn’t love a Jaffa? I think the flavour works so well together and this raw slice is perfect if you’re looking for a healthy treat that satisfies those sweet cravings.

I’ve been in the South Island for 2 months so I super excited to come home and make slices again. They’re probably one of my favourite things to create. You can really make any flavour work which I love! With lockdown in Auckland being over I thought I’d share with you guys some of my favourite cafes / restaurants!

  • Cheek and Chong in Orewa – I’d recommenced the Sweet Potato Pad See Ew.
  • Sip Kitchen – They have delicious raw treats and salads.
  • Gather Cafe – Their blue majik smoothie bowl is amazing!
  • Fields Cafe – I only ever order the smashed pumpkin because it’s too good to pass up.
  • Maru Sushi & Don – This is located in the Silverdale mall and their Tofu Don is probably one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Mum and I go there almost every week.
Raw Orange Chocolate Slice

This heavenly slice consists of three of three layers of gluten free, dairy free, RSF Deliciousness! The base is an oat and almond brownie, the middle layer is a creamy smooth cheesecake consistency made with cashews and fresh oranges and the top layer is a rich crunchy chocolate. Citrus in New Zealand at the moment is amazing so I’ve been making so many citrus inspired desserts. I bought some Pana Organic chocolate orange chocolate the other day and it reminded me how much I loved the flavour combination of chocolate and orange. It’s funny because I dont even like orange flavoured lollies or treats because of how fake they taste but I love a fresh juicy orange and this slice reminds me of just that.

This slice needs around an hour to set in the freezer then after slicing it I recommend keeping it in the fridge.

Serves 10

Minutes 90

Ingredients

Base

1 cup ground almonds

2 cups oat flour

1/3 cup cacao

2 tbsp brown rice syrup / maple / honey

1/4 cup plant milk

Zest from 1 orange

Middle

2 cups soaked cashews (soak overnight or in boiling water for 20 minutes)

Juice from 2 oranges

Zest from 1 orange

2 tbsp brown rice syrup / maple / honey

Topping

1 block of chocolate

1 tbsp coconut oil

Method

First, line a slice tin with baking paper then to make the base add the almonds, oat flour, cacao, liquid sweetener plant milk and orange zest to a food processor and blend together until it becomes a fine sticky texture. Tip this mixture into the slice tin and place in the freezer while you make the middle.

To make the middle layer add the cashews, orange juice, orange zest and liquid sweetener into the food processor and blend until smooth. (you may need to scrap down the sides of the machine a few times) Pour this mixture on top of the base and spread evenly. Place the slice back in the freezer which you melt your chocolate.

Melt your chocolate and coconut oil in a bowl over simmering water then pour on top of the slice. Leave in the freezer for at least 1 hour to set.

Note: When slicing, use a hot knife so the top doesn’t crack.

Have fun and enjoy
